17 September declared memorable day in Pridnestrovie

President Yevgeny Shevchuk has signed the corresponding decree today

Tiraspol, 31 August. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. With regard to the special significance of the republican referendum of 17 September 2016 for the people of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, it is decided to make this date a memorable day. Yevgeny Shevchuk has made the corresponding amendments to the decree of 13 June 2001 «On establishment of professional holidays and memorable days in the PMR».

The amendments to the decree will take effect on the day following the day of its official publication.

On 17 September 2006 Pridnestrovie held an independence referendum. The residents of the PMR were supposed to answer two questions: «Do you support the policy towards the independence of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic and its subsequent free accession to the Russian Federation?» and «Do you find it possible to reject the independence of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic with subsequent accession to the Republic of Moldova?»

The first question received 97.1% of aye votes and 2.3% of nay votes. As for the second question, 3.4% of citizens voted for joining Moldova, and 94.6% voted against it.
